Watching the Returns

As the election returns roll in, the Student Political Society (SPS) will monitor not just the results but also student interest in the November 2 election.

SPS has invited the campus community to join them Tuesday, November 2, from 7:30 until 11:00 p.m. in Bacon Hall 115 to watch returns roll in this evening. The organization has arranged to stream election results from both ABC and NBC and will even provide pizza and soda.

“We plan to poll students on their prior voting record and issues of importance,” said Paul Kwiatkowski, a political science major and president of SPS.

Kwiatkowski, who plans to pursue a career in public service, said, “A lot of people just don’t understand that politics affects them in many ways in day-to-day life.”

Patrick J. McGovern, assistant professor of political science and an expert in the history of democracy, said that students are bombarded with information from 24-hour media sources. “It’s hard to discriminate between facts and campaigning,” he said.
