Women's Basketball Holds Off SUNYIT, 64-61

BUFFALO, NY—Gina Apa (Buffalo/McKinley) scored 16 points and hit two late free throws as Buffalo State (4-8/1-3) earned its first SUNYAC win of the season, defeating SUNYIT (2-10/0-5), 64-61, tonight at the Sports Arena.

Apa was 6 of 10 from the field and added three assists and two steals. Lindsay Smith (Ithaca/Ithaca) scored a career-high 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting and had five rebounds.

Kieran Burns (Moore Catholic) led the Wildcats with 16 points, and Stephanie Stokes (General Brown) had 13 points and seven rebounds.

SUNYIT hit a couple of early 3-pointers and jumped out to a 16-10 lead, before Buffalo State mounted a 15-1 run and held a 33-24 lead at the intermission. The Wildcats hung around in the second half and cut the deficit to 62-61 with 30 seconds remaining, but Apa hit a pair of free throws with 12 seconds to play.

Buffalo State’s Jacey Brooks (Machias/Franklinville) and Darnika Moseley (Liverpool/Liverpool) were recognized prior to the game after the each reached the 1,000-point plateau in Tuesday’s game at Cortland.

Buffalo State will host Oswego tomorrow at 2 p.m.
