Women’s Basketball Outlasts Fredonia, Clinches SUNYAC Playoff Berth

BUFFALO, NY— Shareese Hamer (Erie, PA/ Strong Vincent) had 16 points and 10 rebounds as Buffalo State (9-14/5-9) defeated visiting Fredonia (7-15/2-12), 60-53, and clinched a berth in the SUNYAC playoffs this evening at the Sports Arena.

Barb Kiliszek (Depew/ Lancaster) added 11 points and six steals for the Bengals, and Alyssa Kinney (Medford/ Bellport) chipped nine points and six boards.

Maria Scaffidi (Buffalo/ Holy Angels) paced Fredonia with 19 points. Angela Pucciarelli (Fredonia/ JCC) pitched in 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/ Williamsville North) had 15 points and 10 boards.

Buffalo State led by as many as 10 points in the first half and despite going scoreless for nearly seven minutes, still led 30-24 at the intermission. The Blue Devils rallied in the second frame and took their first lead of the contest at 36-35 with more than 13 minutes remaining. The teams traded the lead back-and-forth, until the Bengals regained the lead for good at 48-47 with just under eight minutes to play. Buffalo State forced 20 Fredonia turnovers and committed only 12.

Buffalo State will sponsor its “Think Pink” event to raise money and awareness for breast cancer when it hosts Morrisville on Friday at 6 p.m.
