Women's Basketball Upset Bid Falls Short Against Cortland, 68-60

BUFFALO, NY—Corland (20-1/13-0) needed to overcome an early 10-point deficit defeat host Buffalo State (6-10/3-10), 68-60, and remain unbeaten in SUNYAC play tonight at the Sports Arena.

Freshman Jessica Laing (Bloomville/S. Kortright) led the Red Dragons with 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Maggie Byrne (Pearl River/Albertus Magnus) had 11 points, and Erin Dabe (Selden/Newfield) chipped in 10 points. Sara Cavanaugh (Hastings-on-Hudson/Hastings) had seven points and collected a game-high 13 rebounds.

Jacey Brooks (Machias/Franklinville) led Buffalo State with 14 points. Toya Parks (Brooklyn/MLK) and Gina Apa (Buffalo/McKinley) added 13 points each. Parks also had six rebounds and six steals.

Buffalo State led 14-4 more than eight minutes into the game, before Cortland cut the deficit to just 28-25 at the intermission. The Red Dragons took their first lead at 33-32 early in the second half and never relinquished the advantage. The Bengals hung around, trailing by just three with six minutes remaining, but Cortland would not let Buffalo State get any closer. The Red Dragons overcame 23 turnovers, compared to just 13 giveaways by Buffalo State. Cortland outrebounded the Bengals, 54-39.

Buffalo State will host New Paltz tomorrow at 3 p.m.
