Women's Hockey Edged by Neumann, 5-4
Buffalo State dropped to 1-11 and 0-7 in the ECAC West after a 5-4 loss to conference opponent Neumann tonight at the Buffalo State Ice Arena. The Knights improved to 5-4 and 5-2-0 in the conference with the win.
After a scoreless first period, Buffalo State took a 1-0 advantage into the final frame on a Maddy Loftus (Parsippany, NJ/Pittsburgh Firebirds) goal with less than five minutes remaining in the second period. The Bengals went up 2-0 after senior Janelle Schmitt (Arlington, WA/Northwest Admirals) scored just 58 seconds into the third period. The Knights would tie the score with two quick goals coming less than a minute apart with 15 minutes to play in the game. Captain Emma Wadsworth (Arlington, VA/Reston Raiders) would put the Bengals back on top with under ten minutes to play in regulation. Less than a minute later Neumann tied the game and then took a 4-3 lead with eight minutes left in the game. Neumann's Michelle Gressett, who had a goal and four assists in the game, would score the eventual game-winning goal, shorthanded, at the 15:59 mark. The Bengals closed the lead to 5-4 with a minute and a half to play when senior Kim Costanzo (Cheektowaga/Buffalo Bisons) scored on Knight goaltender Lauren Voran. The Bengals were unable to score with the extra attacker on the ice and the game ended 5-4.
Buffalo State goaltender Mary Keddie (Williamsville/Buffalo Bisons) made 30 saves in the game. Wadsworth was Buffalo State's leading scorer with a goal and two assists, Schmitt and Loftus each added a goal and an assist to their season totals. The Bengals were outshot 35-23 in the tilt. Buffalo State will face Neumann again tomorrow at 5:00 pm at the Buffalo State Ice Arena.
