Women's Lacrosse Edges St. Mary’s in Double Overtime, 14-13

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md.—Leah Bernal (Marilla/Iroquois) scored the game-winner with just 17 seconds remaining in the second overtime as Buffalo State (6-0) edged host St. Mary’s College of Maryland (5-5), 14-13, today in a non-conference game at Seahawk Stadium.

Freshman Stephanie Georgopolous (Pt. Jefferson Station/Cosewogue) led the Bengals with five goals and an assist. Shantel Ackley (Baldwinsville/CW Baker) added three goals, Katie Henderson (Lakeview/Frontier) and Meagan Powers (Pearl River/Pearl River) scored twice, and Joni Hill (Hagersville, ON/Hagersville) scored once.

St. Mary’s led 7-5 at halftime, before Buffalo State scored the first five goals of the second half to pull ahead. The teams traded leads twice more in regulation, before the Seahawks evened the score at 12-12 with just 44 seconds remaining. Each team scored once in the first overtime, before Bernal scored the winner in the sudden death second extra period. Buffalo State outshot St. Mary’s, 30-26. Tara Ammerman (Naples/Marcus Whitman) played the entire game in goal, making eight saves.

Buffalo State will wrap up its spring break trip to the Baltimore-area tomorrow with a 4 p.m. contest at Goucher.
