Women's Lacrosse Set to Compete for SUNYAC Championship
Buffalo State will travel to Cortland on Friday for the first round of the 2004 SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Championships. This season marks the first time in the 10-year history of the program that the Bengals have qualified for postseason play.
Buffalo State has posted a school best 9-3 overall record and a 4-3 SUNYAC mark this season. The Bengals won six-straight to start the season, including a 10-4 victory at RIT and a come-from-behind win over Elmira at Coyer Field. Buffalo State earned SUNYAC victories over Fredonia, Brockport, Potsdam and Oswego. The Bengals went 7-1 at home this season, with their lone loss coming against Oneonta on April 10th. Second-year Head Coach Meg Stevens, a 2001 graduate of Cortland, has led Buffalo State to its two most successful seasons in program history going 5-9 in her first season and 9-3 so far this season.
Buffalo State saw a number of team and individual records fall this season, including wins in a season and longest unbeaten streak. Sophomore Chelsey Frail (Hilton/East Rochester) leads Buffalo State with 29 goals and nine assists for 38 points. Frail currently ranks third on Buffalo State's all-time scoring list with 75 career points on 52 goals and 23 assists. Junior midfielder Annie Tallchief (Perrysburg/Lakeshore) has moved into a tie for third on the Bengals' all-time scoring list with her 63 points on 50 goals and 13 assists. Buffalo State's Leslie Perreault (Johnson City/Maine Endwell) ranks third on the Bengals' single season scoring list with 25 goals and 11 assists for 36 points. Freshman Leah Bernal (E. Aurora/Iroquois) is currently tied for third on the team in goal scoring with 25 goals in 12 games. First-year goalie Katie Fels (Williamsville/Williamsville East) is on pace to set a single-season goals against average record, posting a 7.64 GAA thru 12 games.
Buffalo State will wrap up its regular season tomorrow when it travels to Alfred University for a 4:00 p.m. contest. The Bengals will meet top-seeded Cortland in the SUNYAC Semifinals on Friday. The Bengals and Red Dragons are set to play at 2:00 p.m. at the SUNY-Cortland Stadium Complex.
