WOW Invites Your Participation

Buffalo State departments, offices, and organizations are invited to help new and transfer students acclimate to college this fall. Planning for Weeks of Welcome 2013, hosted by the Student Life Office, is under way, and everyone is welcome to participate.

“Weeks of Welcome is intended to support student success, help them bond with their peers, and connect them to services on campus,” said Tamara L. McMillan, associate director of Student Life for Leadership.

Weeks of Welcome will take place from August 19 through September 28. The program is designed to introduce students to the college experience. It’s intended for new and transfer students, though all students are welcome to participate. Throughout a six-week period, students will be provided with information, programs, resources, and tools to help them succeed academically, socially, and personally.

This year’s theme is “Be Super!” and each week has a "Be Super!" motif (including “Be Super Knowledgeable,” “Be Super Connected,” “Be Super Creative,” “Be Super Healthy,” and “Be Super Proud”).

Many interactive programs will introduce new and transfer students to campus while welcoming returning students and helping them to reconnect with Buffalo State, according to McMillan.

All college organizations and departments are invited to participate.

“We want the campus community to get involved and incorporate the theme throughout the six weeks,” McMillan said.” For example, departments and offices who participate in the “Be Super Knowledgeable Week” can inform students about various resources they offer and where to go if they need assistance later.

The Career Development Center (CDC) and the Volunteer and Service-Learning Center are sponsoring three events during Weeks of Welcome.

“Finding a part-time job is certainly something that most students worry about the first few weeks of classes, especially those students new to the Buffalo area,” said Stephanie Zuckerman-Aviles, director of the CDC. That’s why they are sponsoring a Part-Time Job Luau on Thursday, August 29. They are also sponsoring a Volunteer Fair on September 11 and a Law School Fair on September 30.

Weeks of Welcome is a tradition at Buffalo State, and this year Student Life is implementing more on-campus programming allowing additional opportunities for students to become engaged, involved, and take pride in their college.

“We’re hoping everyone takes on the 'Be Super' theme as Weeks of Welcome is an essential aspect of the collegiate process,” McMillan said. “We don’t want WOW to be just a series of events that last six weeks, but a campus-wide affair for the whole academic year.”
