Young Entrepreneurs Set Up Shop: KidBiz Market, June 16

The products are prepared, the prices are set, and the sales pitches are rehearsed. On Saturday, June 16, dozens of children from grades three through six will put their entrepreneurial know-how to the test as they take part in the annual KidBiz Market, sponsored by the Small Business Development Center (SBDC).

The kids will line the lawn at the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmer’s Market from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., selling toys, artwork, crafts, food, and live music. Each child is responsible for naming their business, selecting what to sell, creating any displays or signage, financing their business, and interacting with customers.

“The kids are so enthusiastic,” said Andrea Lizak, business advisor at the SBDC. “We never know what types of things will be for sale until the day of the market. It’s always exciting to see the creative new ideas each year.”

Starting a business can be a risky endeavor, but these young go-getters are well prepared. In May, each child was invited to participate in the “Get Ready for KidBiz” training session, also hosted by the SBDC. The training provides information about presentation, pricing, and customer service.

The KidBiz Market was started in 1996, and hundreds of children have participated in the program since. “Each year a handful of kids from the previous year return, and we always receive an excellent response from the community.” Lizak said. “I’ve had people approach me at the market and tell me they remember participating in KidBiz years ago, and that they’re excited for their children to participate.”

The KidBiz Market will also take place on July 7 and August 4. To sell a product at the KidBiz Market children must bring their own table and are charged a $2 space fee.
