You're Special: Buffalo State Students Help Children in Need

Valentine’s Day isn’t all about diamonds and roses. For Western New York’s homeless children, it may not even be about candy. This week, Buffalo State’s student chapter of the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) plans to give such children a little extra love in honor of the holiday.

“Every year, our ACEI chapter does at least two service projects,” said Dianne McCarthy, chapter adviser and assistant professor of elementary education and reading. “This year, we’re working with Cornerstone Manor to put on a Valentine’s Day party for the children.” Cornerstone Manor, part of Buffalo City Mission, serves women and children who are homeless or who are escaping from an abusive situation.

“Helping children in need is ACEI’s theme this year,” said senior Liza M. Acanfora, president of the ACEI chapter on campus. “We thought this party would be a good activity, because the situation these children are escaping from has an effect on them.” After the party, Acanfora and the other student volunteers will babysit the children so the mothers can attend a brief activity.

With Valentine-themed balloons, crafts, games, and treats, the ACEI students will hold the party later this week.
